What to wear to the gym over 50
"What should a 50-year-old man wear to the gym" is one of the most searched questions in our category, and most of the answers come from people who are not fifty. Here is the version from the crew that is. It applies to women too, with one or two swaps noted. Training experience, not medical advice.
The short answer
A performance tee that fits, shorts with real pockets, flat shoes for lifting or the right shoe for the sport, a cap if you train outside, and nothing that needs explaining. You do not need to dress twenty-five. You do not need to dress like a retirement brochure either. Dress like someone who trains.
Top
- Performance tee, not a cotton souvenir shirt. A four-ounce moisture-wicking knit dries between sets and does not turn into a wet towel by the third exercise. Cotton is for after.
- Fit: straight, not tight. Room through the shoulder, hem that stays put in a hinge, sleeve that ends mid-bicep. Compression tops are a tool, not a uniform.
- Tanks belong in the weight room. If you have the shoulders, a tank on lifting days is honest gear. Outdoors, keep the sleeve for the sun.
- One small mark, not a billboard. Nobody over fifty needs a slogan across the chest to prove they belong in the room.
Bottom
- Shorts with a drawstring and mesh pockets. Seven-inch inseam for most men, five for runners. The pocket has to hold a phone without swinging.
- Joggers for cold mornings and long warm-ups. Tapered, not baggy, not skin-tight.
- Women: the same shorts, or capris and leggings with a real waistband. Pockets still matter.
Feet
Flat, firm shoes for lifting. Running shoes for running. Court shoes for pickleball and tennis. Wearing one pair for all three is how ankles and knees start complaining. Replace running shoes before they are a year old.
The three things that make you look like you belong
- Clean gear that fits. Not new. Clean, and cut for the body you have.
- A plan. The person with a program and a notebook looks more at home than anyone in matching sets.
- Showing up on the days you said you would. That is the whole uniform.
What we wear
GreybeardPRO's Core 01 line was built for exactly this: the Performance Tee (4 oz, moisture-wicking, UPF 44+), the Athletic Short (quick-dry, mesh pockets, drawstring) and the Premium Tee for after. Made to order in the USA for men and women over fifty who still train. If you want to see who else is in the room, the Greybeard Club is the door. Still in.
